Blessed November, my friends! We are in the penultimate month of 2018 and so much has changed already. I think we can all agree that this has been a year of BIG changes with some rather unexpected plot twists. Stability is in increasingly short supply and perhaps that is why stability is the first keyword that popped into my mind when the Queen of Pentacles showed up with a Tarot Soul Coaching message for us this morning.
A.E. Waite says this about the Queen of Pentacles in his Pictorial Key to the Tarot:
The face suggests that of a dark woman, whose qualities might be summed up in the idea of greatness of soul; she has also the serious cast of intelligence; she contemplates her symbol and may see worlds therein. Divinatory Meanings: Opulence, generosity, magnificence, security, liberty. Reversed: Evil, suspicion, suspense, fear, mistrust.
It is interesting to see that Waite has the Queen of Pentacles as an influence who provides both security and liberty. It could be said that the former is the foundation of the latter. When children are raised without stability and security, they become prisoners of fear and mistrust (the reversed meanings for this Queen).
I have been thinking a lot about stability in the past week because I have been stalked by cards from the suit of Pentacles. As an Earth Sign (Sun in Capricorn), I feel I should have the hang of this physical stability malarkey already, what with being nearly 50… but the truth is, I was raised almost completely without it and have had to try to create it for myself, which often didn’t work out very well…

My mother left when I was three. My home environment was abusive and when you don’t have enough stability to prognosticate future events, you learn to live for the moment. Immediate satisfaction and cheap thrills easily replace delayed satisfaction and long-term goals because you are made to feel very early on that long-term goals are simply not achievable.
The presence of a nurturing influence like the Queen of Pentacles was missing for me. I’m not sharing this for sympathy (nor am I making excuses for myself!) but rather because I know that this is true for so many who are reading these words… I’m sharing my story in the hopes that healing may begin… It’s not too late. It’s never too late.
In the Frideborg Tarot, we have the Queen of Pentacles in a bridal gown. She is a woman of her word. The white dress represents her purity of intent to stand firm and honour her vow… Finding someone to marry became an early obsession for me, in my quest for stability… when really, I would have been better off seeking that stability within first.

In the Spirit Keeper’s Tarot, the Queens are Shields and correspond to geographical locations as well. In the case of The Ebony Shield she is Europe and Africa. All Shields are guardians against evil spirits and protect our success in their respective realm. The Ebony Shield protects our material quest and success in the physical realm.
Last night, during my Samhain ritual, I connected with the spirit of my grandmother, Märtha. She was one influence who managed to provide a modicum of stability during my childhood years. I feel that this message is almost an extension of the chat I had with her last night. My grandmother who was an expert gardener, excellent cook and could make almost anything with her hands embodied the Queen of Pentacles in more ways than one. She was also the person who introduced me to the divinatory arts.
