We’re moving up from the Five in the suit of Pentacles with today’s draw. Pentacles relate to work, the body, physical manifestation and money matters. Funnily enough this week is all about work for me, since I’m fully booked for readings and have blocked every minute of my schedule off. This is what A.E. Waite has to say about the 8 of Pentacles in his Pictorial Key to the Tarot:
An artist in stone at his work, which he exhibits in the form of trophies. Divinatory Meanings: Work, employment, commission, craftsmanship, skill in craft and business, perhaps in the preparatory stage. Reversed: Voided ambition, vanity, cupidity, exaction, usury. It may also signify the possession of skill, in the sense of the ingenious mind turned to cunning and intrigue
What I noticed when I studied the Giant Rider Waite 8 of Pentacles this morning that though proudly displayed, the pentacles are not identical and not the same size. The craftsman in this card is striving for excellence but not perfection. There is no such thing as perfection anyway. Any time we win over chaos by creating something, we should take pride in our work.
So what if what we made isn’t ‘perfect’ or exactly how we imagined it? It is there – created. And because we used our skills and diligence to create it, we learned something in the process. This learning can then be added to our skills library and we keep growing, keep improving… It’s a joyful dance and we should no more berate ourselves for our imperfections than we should a toddler learning to walk.
I have no doubt in my mind that Pamela Coleman Smith made the Pentacles of varying sizes on purpose. The astrological correspondence for the 8 of Pentacles is Sun in Virgo and to avoid perfectionism is one of the big life lessons for Virgo.
Striving for perfection rather than diligence can keep us frozen in fear. It means we create an impossibly high standard for ourselves and then it becomes all too easy to use the excuse, ‘What’s the point of even trying?’
I know this old chestnut all too well myself, with my Virgo South Node holding me back and reinforcing the natural pessimism of my Capricorn Sun, Venus and Mercury. So today my affirmation is: I joyfully embrace my imperfections as I diligently work to meet my goals.Diligence is the mother of good luck. ~ Benjamin Franklin Click To Tweet
