5 of Pentacles – A Fear of Lack

5 of Pentacles A Fear of Lack

Mercury (the mind) in Taurus (Fixed Earth) in the 5th sphere (Gevurah) on the Tree of Life can cause all kinds of problems… And while many of them are there, many of them are also imagined. Fear keeps us stuck in poverty consciousness and the fear of lack prevents us from reaching out, sharing or asking for help, thus perpetuating a state of poverty and need.

Smith Waite Tarot 5 of Pentacles

When I pulled the 5 of Pentacles as our Tarot Soul Coaching card of the day from The Complete Tarot Kit (in the image at the top of the post), the words ‘Don’t let a fear of lack hold you back!’ popped into my mind. The remedy is in the card itself in the traditional RWS Tarot. Behind those stained glass windows, there is grace and warmth waiting. The only reason we choose to stay out in the cold is because either we don’t feel worthy or we are too proud to ask. One doesn’t preclude the other, by the way – I know that mix of not feeling worthy and yet feeling too proud to ask for help all to well, based on my own experiences!

A.E. Waite has this to say about the 5 of Pentacles in his Pictorial Key to the Tarot:

Two mendicants in a snow-storm pass a lighted casement. Divinatory Meanings: The card foretells material trouble above all, whether in the form illustrated–that is, destitution–or otherwise. For some cartomancists, it is a card of love and lovers-wife, husband, friend, mistress; also concordance, affinities. These alternatives cannot be harmonized. Reversed: Disorder, chaos, ruin, discord, profligacy.

The truth is that we are never too poor to love a little better and the love we share will always come back to us.

5 of Pentacles Frideborg Tarot

In the Frideborg Tarot, I have opted for an image that conveys the feeling of being out in the cold and this is the poem for the 5 of Pentacles out of the Frideborg Tarot Companion:

I may not have a lot, that much is true And that is why I come to you…
I’m seeking your assistance So that I may have a chance.

In sickness and in health they say But most people just walk away.
Disease and poverty sees off many a ‘friend’ I hang in there this can’t be the end.
All I need right now is a helping hand… This mess I’m in wasn’t planned.
If ever you should find yourself in need Karma will surely return your good deed.

I believe that, as long as there is plenty, poverty is evil. – Robert Kennedy Click To Tweet
