Life is filled with detours and dead ends, trials and challenges of every kind. Each of us has likely had times when distress, anguish, and despair almost consumed us.
~ Russell M. Nelson
Very few of us squeal with delight when the 5 of Pentacles shows up as the card of the day. Yet, I had some amazing insights about this card earlier this morning that may make me do just that next time. I owe at least half of that insight to Rachel Pollack and her talk about the Devil at the 2018 UK Tarot Conference.
She covered the hidden mysteries of the difficult cards and when she talked about the 5 of Pentacles, she pointed out that the 5 pentacles in the church window form the upper five sephiroth of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. It was when I was studying the card image this morning in my Giant Rider Waite Tarot, that I looked even higher up on the card and saw something else… The stained glass doesn’t reach all the way up to the top of the window…
Instead, we see the grey matter of consciousness itself and what looks like yods (present in the Moon and Tower cards). Two yods in a row represent one of the names of God, i.e. ‘Adonai,’ so in the window we have ‘Adonai, Adonai!’ which is interesting since Jesus calls out another name of God (Eli) twice before he says, ‘Why have you forsaken me?’
So what does this tell us about those time when it feels like we are at the end of our tether or challenged beyond what we are able to bear like the two people in the traditional Smith Waite Tarot deck (or indeed Christ on the cross)?
It means that we need to remember that we live in a hologram – something I have been keenly aware of since the out-of-body experience that took place when I was about five or six years old. It was much more than an ordinary dream and not something I can easily describe other than as a place I visited that felt more real than my earthly existence, and that was made of light, colour and music. I saw colours that I couldn’t even see with my ordinary physical eyes and I guess that is how I know even know, decades later, that it wasn’t just an ordinary dream.
The fact that we live in a hologram doesn’t mean that what happens to us here doesn’t matter or that we ought not make the best of our lives on the physical plane. Quite the opposite! It means we have to use our God/Christ consciousness to start reprogramming our lives to realise that we are here to learn about compassion and caring for each other.
We are here, by choice (!), in the game of life to have all the kind of experiences life offers us – including the really difficult ones. It is often during times of distress that we have awakenings about what truly matters, about ‘the beyond’ of 3D reality… but only IF we remember to look up.
Above you see different 5 of Pentacles cards from various decks. I was actually quite shocked to find that the borderless Smith-Waite had cut out what I now feel is the most important part of the 5 of Pentacles cards – the yods! The decks (from top left to right) are Frideborg Tarot, Giant Rider Waite, Borderless Smith Waite, Motherpeace Tarot, Phantasmagoric Theatre Tarot and the Spirit Keeper’s Tarot.
So did I exaggerate when I said I might squeal with delight the next time I see the 5 of Pentacles? No, I don’t think so and that’s because it will serve as a comforter in troubled times, reminding me that God/Source/The All never ever abandons us and that only love is real. The Tarot does what any true hero does – It gives us hope when we are feeling distressed.
Wishing you a wonderful week!
Love and Blessings,
