The Party told you to reject all evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.
— from “Nineteen Eighty Four” by George Orwell
There has been a lot of talk about truth, lies and ‘alternative facts’ in media recently. Maybe it got some of you wondering if there is a Tarot card for ‘alternative facts.’ Yes, there is. It’s the 7 of Swords, with the following traditional keywords: lies, deceit, theft… and now ‘alternative facts.’
Dan Rather published this post on how to deal with ‘alternative facts.’ You could say his post is the inspiration for this post. But I want to take it a step further. What can we do as people of faith if we feel we are being lied to? There are two methods of dealing with lies:
a) Do what the little boy in the Emperor’s New Clothes by H.C. Andersen did, which was to shout ‘Look mummy, the Emperor is naked!’ (because just as lies are lies, the truth is undeniably the truth)
b) Ask God for wisdom about how to deal with the situation that is helpful and constructive. (James 1:4)
These two methods aren’t mutually exclusive. We can have both an innocent and childlike approach when exposed to propaganda and lies and a more cunning/cutting way of dealing with it. The latter is actually the remedy for how to deal with lies found within the 7 of Swords, just at the other end of the spectrum.
You will see me using the hashtag #theemperorisnaked from time to time. I used it this morning when I tweeted @Potus the quote above. Other good hashtags to use when we expose the propaganda machine are #alternativefacts and #orwellianfacts (the latter proposed by Dan Rather).
It has never been more important to exercise discernment about where you get your facts from… and I know I don’t need to tell you this but there is no such thing as ‘alternative’ facts.
Love and Blessings,
